Accounting and finance at 91¶¶Òõ is taught by our School of Business and Law. AACSB accreditation is achieved by fewer than 6% of business schools worldwide.

Accounting and finance are essential to any successful business career. Constantly evolving with new technologies and regulations, accounting and financial issues create both challenges and opportunities for professionals.

Our Finance and Accounting BSc degree will help you to understand how money works at an organisational and individual level, alongside developing critical skills that are valued by employers, like problem-solving, analytical thinking and the ability to communicate complex financial information in a clear and concise manner.

Entry criteria

Entry requirements

A-levels or BTEC
Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBB–BCC (120–104 UCAS Tariff points), or BTEC Extended Diploma DDM–MMM. Our conditional offers typically fall within this range.

International Baccalaureate
26 points, with three subjects at Higher level.

Access to HE Diploma
Pass with 60 credits overall. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 24 credits at merit.

T-level
Merit in the Finance or Accounting T-levels. No other T-levels accepted.

GCSE (minimum grade C or grade 4)
At least maths.

Foundation degree/HND
May enable you to start the course in year 2. Relevant subjects required.

Studied before or got relevant experience?
A qualification, HE credits or relevant experience may count towards your course at 91¶¶Òõ and could mean that you do not have to take some elements of the course or can start in year 2 or 3.

At 91¶¶Òõ, we understand that not everyone has the same opportunities, and some may face extra challenges to meet grade requirements. Every 91¶¶Òõ applicant is treated as an individual and we value creativity, persistence, resourcefulness and big ideas alongside grades.

Course structure

In your first year, you will acquire core knowledge and skills of accounting and finance, as well as basic principles of economics.

In your second year, you will learn about the transformation of financial reporting and accounting using modern management information systems, and through case studies you will also learn the fundamentals of business ethics, corporate governance and basic principles of corporate taxation.

As you progress, the flexibility of this course allows you to tailor your learning to your interests through option modules, many of which attract exemptions from professional bodies.

You can choose to take a paid placement year between your second and third year, which allows you to put your learning into practice and improves your skills and employability.

In your final year, you will become more critical and analytical in your thinking, applying your skills to problem solving whilst also focusing on key subjects of your choice.

Learning on our Accountancy and Finance degree is delivered through a stimulating mix of seminars, academic and industry lectures and workshops. You will mainly be assessed through group work, presentations, exams and essays.

In your first year, you will be introduced to the core disciplines of economics, finance and accounting.

  • Fundamentals of Management Accounting

    This module introduces you to the concepts, principles and techniques of management accounting, essential to the world of business and finance. Alongside the fundamentals of financial accounting, you’ll gain a foundation of knowledge that will support you as you build further understanding of basic accounting data flows within an organisation and the preparation of financial and managerial reports.

  • Fundamentals of Financial Accounting

    This module introduces you to the concepts, principles and techniques of financial accounting which are essential when working in the world of business and finance. It will give you a foundation on which to develop further understanding of basic accounting data flows in an organisation. You will also learn how to prepare financial reports and company accounts for internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Financial Skills

    The module will help you to develop the mathematical skills required to solve financial problems. You’ll explore a wide range of mathematical techniques to develop and enhance your capacity for solving practical problems. Areas covered include arithmetic, algebra with elements of pre-calculus, probabilities and statistics.

  • Business Economics

    In this module you will develop your understanding of key economic concepts by applying them to contemporary issues within the world of business and through the application of quantitative techniques. You will also gain an understanding of how political, economic and environmental factors influence the world of business.

  • Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management

    This module will introduce you to a range of concepts, principles and theories that have been adopted within the study of organisational behaviour and human resource management and will give you an insight into how people are managed and organised in the workplace. You will develop an understanding of the relationship between the internal and external environment and the role that employees play in designing and achieving organisational goals.

  • Academic and Professional Skills

    This module will provide you with the basic skills and strategies needed to study successfully at undergraduate level and help you develop the attributes that contribute to employability. You’ll also gain the practical professional skills to confidently use spreadsheet software to present financial information and as an analytical tool.

  • Business Ethics and Corporate Governance

    The power and influence of business in society is greater than ever, and the demands placed on business to be ethical by its various stakeholders are becoming more complex and challenging. This module looks at the fundamentals of business ethical decision making, the pressures to compromise the ethical standards of individuals and their organisations, and the safeguards against malpractice, illustrated by real-life case studies.

  • Financial Management

    The module provides an appreciation of financial decision-making within an organisation. You'll be able to explore decisions related to the financing, long-term investments and operations of an organisation.

  • Business and Corporate Law

    In this module you will gain an understanding of the principles of business and company law and develop an awareness of how important law is within the business context. You will examine the general principles of the English legal system and examine contract law, the law of torts, agency law and partnership law. You will also look at the law governing the formation, financing and management of companies through to corporate collapse and acquire a sound knowledge of the legal issues involved in business organisations.

  • Management Accounting Systems

    Explore contemporary issues in management information systems and management accounting, in the context of financial planning and decision-making, and management reporting. You'll develop a foundation of theoretical and technical knowledge of management information systems and their design, integrated with core management accounting techniques.

  • Financial Accounting and Reporting

    This module builds on the principles of financial reporting and introduces you to corporate taxation. You'll put this into context by extending your existing knowledge of financial accounting to include more advanced financial reporting for companies and groups.

  • Personal Financial Planning

    This module is an exploration of the principles of personal financial planning and investment, integrating theory and practice. You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of the interlinked relationships between the various components which encompass personal finance matters. This includes an analysis of various generic products, incorporating the inherent elements of risk and taxation, and the techniques and stages of personal financial planning. 

  • Financial Modelling and Dealing

    During this module you will learn the basic tools and data handling skills that will enable you to model financial relationships and understand the principles of stock market trading. You will also be introduced to specialist software to carry out set tasks. You’ll develop the practical skills and knowledge needed for further study and to enhance employment opportunities.

  • Applied Business Analytics

    This module will help you to develop an analytic mindset and equip you with basic data literacy that is useful for the business environment. You will look at methodologies, algorithms and challenges related to analysing and presenting business data alongside applying data analysis to support decision-making across business functions and industries.

Placement year

The paid work placement year is a vital part of the course. It gives you the chance to apply your learning to real-life situations and challenges, to meet and network with potential employers, and have opportunities to get real work experience before you graduate – something that employers value highly.

Final year

In addition to tailoring your degree through option modules such as international finance, taxation and auditing, you will learn practical skills such as financial reporting. Depending on your module choices, this may give you exemptions from the examinations of the accrediting bodies.

  • Financial and Corporate Reporting

    This module examines the areas that will need to be considered by accountants of the future. Using your knowledge of financial accounting, you'll explore them in the context of financial and corporate reporting to more advanced financial reporting for companies and groups.

  • Finance and Risk Management

    This module focuses on financial management, and mainly the issues that affect corporate financial managers. It has two parts: the first deals with applied topics in corporate finance and the second explores risk management tools and techniques. Areas covered include an appreciation of financial risk management and the use of derivatives, and analysis of capital structure and investment decisions.

  • Management Control Systems

    On this module you'll draw on the technical understanding gained in management accounting modules in years 1 and 2. You'll develop a comprehensive understanding of operational and management control systems, and explore alternative perspectives of the role of management accounting in organisations and society.

  • Taxation

    This module introduces the UK tax system and considers the basics of tax planning opportunities and techniques.

  • Fintech (Financial Technologies)

    This module explores how fintech is reshaping the financial services ecosystem with emphasis on regulation, competition and financing of innovation. You'll examine payments, deposits and lending, blockchain, insurance (insurtech), open banking, capital raising, wealth management and market provisioning domains. You'll have the opportunity to learn from guest lecturers from fintechs and banks plus gain hands-on experience through solving case studies.

  • Audit and Assurance

    This module will develop your understanding of the critical aspects of carrying out assurance engagements including statutory audit engagements, and their application in the context of the professional regulatory framework. You'll focus on applying theory to case studies and current issues facing auditors in the UK.

  • Carbon Accounting

    The module covers the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GGP) with its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions as well as associated issues such as net-zero, carbon offsets and certification processes. You'll use 91¶¶Òõ HESA Estates data to demonstrate your understanding of GGP and to explore potential mitigating strategies. You'll also undertake a short (equivalent of two days) consultancy with local small businesses to understand their emissions.

  • Investment Management

    On this module you'll use what you've learned so far on your course to understand current best practice in investment analysis considering a variety of asset classes, and apply your knowledge to the managing of institutional investment portfolios.

  • Banking and Money

    This module introduces the study of banking and money. You'll cover two broad areas:

    • the microeconomic and managerial aspects of banking, such as the bank risk, efficiency, competition and performance
    • the macroeconomic elements of banking instability, the role of banks in the monetary transmission mechanism, the interplay between banks, regulators and policy makers, and the role of banks in setting the interest rates.
  • International Finance

    International Finance takes the areas of finance and financial management you’ve studied in a domestic setting and explores how the domestic theory alters in an international setting due to factors such as exchange rates and country risk. You will also be introduced to the international financial management complexities associated with the foreign direct investment decisions of multinational companies.

Accreditation 

This course is accredited by five professional bodies, and successful completion of specific modules offers exemptions from professional exams. You may also benefit from student membership, access to networking events and online resources.

Exemptions from Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

This course includes modules accredited by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA). On successful completion of the course, all students will be exempt from the ACCA's Applied Knowledge level papers and the Corporate and Business Law, Performance Management, Financial Reporting and Financial Management papers from the Applied Skills level (formerly papers F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F7 and F9).

Depending on the options you choose you can complete eight of the nine ACCA Applied level papers to become a part-qualified accountant.

  • Students taking the Taxation module option at level 6 will also get exemption from the ACCA's Taxation paper (formerly F6).

  • Students completing the Audit and Assurance module will also get exemption from the ACCA's Audit and Assurance paper (formerly F8).

Completion of these papers will also meet the entry requirements to apply for our ACCA Accountancy MSc.

The ICAEW is a world leading professional membership organisation that promotes, develops and supports more than 147,000 chartered accountants worldwide.

Depending on module choices all students could be exempt from the Professional Stage papers: Accounting, Management Information, Law and Financial Management.

You can also be exempt from the ICAEW Assurance and Principles of Taxation if the optional modules Audit and Assurance and Taxation are passed.

Fees and costs

Course fees

UK (full-time) 9,535 GBP

International (full-time) 17,250 GBP

This course offers a professional placement (sandwich) year in year 3. If you choose to take this placement you will pay a reduced fee during this year. For students starting their undergraduate degree in the 2025–26 academic year, the fee for the professional placement year is £1,500 for UK students and £1,850 for international students. This fee may be subject to small increases in line with inflation.

ICAEW Foundation Bursary

Provided by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), this bursary is open to undergraduates studying Accounting and Finance BSc(Hons) who are from a low-income background (family income £20-£25k). The successful student will receive £12,000 over three years. Find out how to apply.

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2025–26.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or RPI (whichever is higher).

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

What's included

You may have to pay additional costs during your studies. The cost of optional activities is not included in your tuition fee and you will need to meet this cost in addition to your fees. A summary of the costs that are included and any extras that you may be expected to pay while studying a course in the School of Business and Law in the 2022–23 academic year are listed here.

  • Students who choose to take an optional placement will have travel and living expenses. The cost of this depends on where and how long your placement is.
  • Textbooks are available from the university library (many as e-books) but you may wish to budget up to £200 to buy your own copies.
  • For the International Tourism Management BSc, International Tourism Management with Marketing BSc, International Event Management BSc, and International Event Management with Marketing BSc, field trips are an optional activity, but we do strongly advise participation as they contribute to the overall experience of studying this degree. The cost for field trips is not included in the tuition fee and must be paid for by students, however please be assured we do try to keep field trip costs to a minimum and don't anticipate the total cost of a few field trips each year to exceed £30. If you would struggle to meet this cost, there is a hardship fund that you may be able to access.

Two miles north of 91¶¶Òõ seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Moulsecoomb has been transformed by a recent development of our estate. On campus you’ll find new Students’ Union, events venue and sports and fitness facilities, alongside the library and student centre.

Over 900 students live here in our Moulsecoomb Place halls and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains so you can access all the exciting things happening in our home city.

Accommodation

We guarantee an offer of a place in halls of residence to all eligible students. So if you applied for halls by the deadline you are guaranteed a room in our halls of residence.

We have self-catered halls on all our campuses, within minutes of your classes, and other options that are very nearby.

You can apply for any of our halls, but the options closest to your study location are:

  • Mithras Halls are stylish new high-rises in the heart of the student village at our revitalised Moulsecoomb campus with ensuite rooms for more than 800 students.
  • Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.

The city of 91¶¶Òõ & Hove is a forward-thinking place which leads the way in the arts, technology, sustainability and creativity. You'll find living here plays a key role in your learning experience.

91¶¶Òõ is a leading centre for creative media technology, recently named the startup capital of the UK.

The city is home to a national 5G testbed and over 1,000 tech businesses. The digital sector is worth over £1bn a year to the local economy – as much as tourism.

All of our full-time undergraduate courses involve work-based learning - this could be through placements, live briefs and guest lectures. Many of these opportunities are provided by local businesses and organisations.

It's only 50 minutes by train from 91¶¶Òõ to central London and there are daily direct trains to Bristol, Bedford, Cambridge, Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Southampton.

Your personal academic tutor, course leader and other tutors are all there to help you with your personal and academic progress. You'll also have a student support and guidance tutor (SSGT) who can help with everything from homesickness, managing stress or accommodation issues.

Sport 91¶¶Òõ brings together our sport and recreation services. As a 91¶¶Òõ student you'll have use of sport and fitness facilities across all our campuses and there are opportunities to play for fun, fitness or take part in serious competition.

Our sports scholarship scheme is designed to help students develop their full sporting potential to train and compete at the highest level. We offer scholarships for elite athletes, elite disabled athletes and talented sports performers.
