Intro

Our Engineering Management MSc degree has been developed to meet the demand for professionals who combine technical and engineering skills with business and management knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurial leadership.

This postgraduate degree is designed specifically to extend and deepen your knowledge of engineering principles and their application to business practice, to help you progress your career in your chosen field.

You will study advanced modules covering engineering management and supply chain management, including the opportunity to study alongside students from our School of Business and Law. The course also offers option modules which will allow you to focus on renewable technologies or environmental impact assessment, with the potential to combine with data management. Alternatively you can develop an engineering-related competence of your choice.

The group project enables you to work in a team, in a consultancy role, on a real-world problem set by industry. Option modules give you the opportunity to focus on your preferred specialism, and include areas such as renewable energy, environmental impact assessment, and data analysis.

You will learn alongside academics who are experts in their field and have established connections and experience in industry and in research including our Centres of Research Excellence and the Advanced Engineering Centre. As part of your degree you also have the opportunity to undertake a one-year placement to help build your technical and managerial skills as well as the soft skills business look for.

Degree and experience
Normally a 2.2 and above in an engineering subject. If you have a degree in another numerate technical discipline including physics and chemistry your application will be assessed individually.

English language requirements

Course structure

This postgraduate masters degree can be studied full-time or part-time.

To be awarded the MSc, you must obtain 180 M-level credits: 60 credits through the completion of your masters dissertation, 80 credits from compulsory modules and 40 credits from the option modules.

Core modules

  • Engineering Management

    In this module, you'll develop the skills needed to assess and use management and professional techniques, taking a hands-on and practical approach. These skills are crucial for the effective introduction and management of innovative or complex engineering products and components.

  • Supply Chain Management

    This module is designed to deepen your knowledge of supply chain management and provide a broad strategic view of the subject. Topics covered include the value chain as a source of competitive advantage and the strategic supply chain management; planning and control within the supply chain; the impact of globalisation, complex systems and the challenge of managing the extended supply chain in the light of exogenous factors; and evaluating and managing supply chain risk.

  • Major Team Project

    Working in a small team, you'll investigate a real-world engineering problem, come up with possible solutions and choose the most appropriate in terms of technical and business viability. The major team project is an opportunity to use and develop your leadership, management, team skills, project management and technical knowledge.

  • MSc Engineering Dissertation

    This 10000-word dissertation project enables you to undertake independent research in civil engineering and demonstrate your capacity for critical thinking and devising or recommending creative and appropriate solutions to a specific problem through your understanding and application of advanced engineering concepts.

  • Environmental Impact Assessment

    This module will examine the principles behind, and the practice of, environmental impact assessment (EIA). You will study the development of EIA and its integration into EU and UK law, and the relationship between EIA and sustainable development. You’ll also explore the importance of strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and the effects that it may have on UK and EU environmental management. The module will use case studies to provide local and national examples of environmental statements and discuss the importance of quality and review.

  • Introduction to Statistical Data Analysis with R

    This module will teach you the basics of statistics and computer programming needed for data analysis. You will use R to run computer simulations and explore random processes. You'll use what you've learned during the module to complete a realistic data analysis project.

  • Renewable Technologies

    This module enables you to explore the engineering aspects of renewable technologies, focusing on biomass photovoltaic systems, energy networks and storage. You'll consider topics such as energy storage solutions, the renewable incentive, metering technologies, and design for reduction of energy demand.

  • Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Data

    In this module you will study a range of data analysis and machine learning methods for turning raw data into useful information and knowledge that provides a solid basis for operational and other decisions arising within different professional situations. You will learn how these methods work and how to select the most appropriate ones to find useful and relevant patterns, trends and anomalies in data sets.

  • Professional Development

    On this module you'll develop as an independent learner in the engineering profession. You'll work on a project or design subject on an engineering-related topic outside of the normal syllabus, exploring your personal professional development needs.

Placement year

To further increase your employability and international experience we offer full-time students starting in September the opportunity to take a placement year. This means that your course will take two years, but you’ll be graduating with work experience.

The year on placement in a role related to your course will allow you to put all that you have learned on your masters into practice, enhancing your career opportunities and giving you practical experience in your area of expertise.

The placement is assessed formatively throughout the year, giving you the chance to reflect on your experience and helping to build your CV.

Work placements are optional, and you'll arrange your placement with support from our dedicated Placements and Employability team.

We offer a two-year international study visa route to support applications for this course.

I have spent most of my life in industry. Having started in the Royal Navy and then through a range of consultancy roles I have been lucky enough to experience a variety of diverse types of engineering and ways of getting things done. This journey has impressed upon me the merits of not only being technically competent, but in having the vision and creativity to establish what needs to be done; and the implementation skills, competencies and behaviours to have the best chance of actually achieving the end result.

As we advance technically it is expected that the next few years will deliver societal benefits in diverse areas such as the food chain, water, energy, waste management and health care. It is clear that studying engineering provides competencies that are not only pivotal to delivering these societal changes, but will also be required in larger amounts.

My advice to students is to explore the wealth of knowledge that exists and strive for excellence during your time at the university. I would also advise you to be kind. Kindness and decency in how you deal with others in delivering projects can be just as important as your technical ability.

In your career you need a combination of knowledge, skills, personal qualities and relevant experiences – and you’ll get all of this from your degree.

  • Develop your technical engineering knowledge and skills combined with business and resource management to manage technically complex projects and processes.

Our specialist facilities include:

  • Simulation Suite has car and flight simulators with VR and motion platform technology.
  • Robotics lab and VR facilities are equipped with the latest technology to support research and practical projects.
  • STEP lab (Sustainable Technology and Engineering Projects), is a collaborative, project-based way of working is open to all of our engineering students. STEP lab members work on projects that reflect real engineering projects in industry, developing their technical and professional skills working in functional control and experimentation facilities, with access to industry standard hardware and software.
  • You’ll also be able to take your designs from concept to completion using equipment like the wind tunnel, prototyping labs, 3D printers and CNC machines.

Two miles north of 91¶¶Òõ seafront, Moulsecoomb is our largest campus and student village. Moulsecoomb has been transformed by a recent development of our estate. On campus you’ll find new Students’ Union, events venue and sports and fitness facilities, alongside the library and student centre.

Over 900 students live here in our Moulsecoomb Place halls and the new Mithras halls – Brunswick, Goldstone, Hanover, Preston and Regency.

Moulsecoomb has easy access to buses and trains so you can access all the exciting things happening in our home city.

We have self-catered halls on all our campuses, within minutes of your classes, and other options that are very nearby.

You can apply for any of our halls, but the options closest to your study location are:

  • Mithras Halls are stylish new high-rises in the heart of the student village at our revitalised Moulsecoomb campus with ensuite rooms for more than 800 students.
  • Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Moulsecoomb campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.
