Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship

Working as a nurse is a challenging but rewarding career choice that requires commitment, intellectual ability,  compassion teamwork and a desire to care for others. This programme allows apprentices to qualify for registered status as a Child, Adult or Mental Health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Over the three-year programme, they will learn alongside other undergraduate nursing students, and develop and enhance the knowledge, skills and values required to meet the Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2018).

Recognising that patients come first in everything the NHS does and the values of the NHS constitution – respect, dignity, compassion and working together for patients – are embedded in our curriculum.

We will support apprentices in becoming a caring and compassionate professional who delivers skilled, evidence-based care in partnership with patients, families and communities. Our focus on interdisciplinary will enrich your experience whilst preparing you for professional practice.

Applicants who have completed the Nursing Associate Higher Apprenticeship will be considered as per the usual process of admissions for apprentices.

Make sure that you’ve read the FAQs and that you meet the eligibility criteria before you submit an application.

Programme details

Programme structure

The programme is designed around a spiral curriculum which establishes and reinforces the core knowledge, skills and values required for nursing practice, allowing you to recognise the context of your knowledge in the wider organisation of health and social care services.

You will also attend a range of placements in community and hospital settings as well as three weeks per year of the course in on-the-job training when you will return to your workplace.

In the first year the curriculum is based on the development of self; this expands to the development of self within relationships with service users in the second year; and in the third year you will explore the development of self and leadership within multi-professional teams and organisations.

With support from the employer, apprentices are required to spend a minimum of 20% of paid working hours on studies and be able to evidence this (off-the-job learning). This is a statutory requirement for apprenticeships and the funding is conditional on this being met. Off-the-job learning includes activities which have not previously been a part of the role and furthers apprentice development into new areas.

As a student on this course you’ll also get to participate in – hour-long sessions where students come together to listen to stories and share reflections in a supportive and confidential environment. The sessions offer the opportunity to reflect on the emotional aspects of clinical practice and are designed to support students and recent graduates working in complex settings.

Teaching and assessment

The programme learning and teaching strategy is designed to facilitate independent learning and make use of your existing study skills, prior knowledge and experiences.

Learning is enhanced by expert knowledge shared by a wide range of practice colleagues and service users. Interprofessional education is supported through collaborative working with students and apprentices on other health and social care courses, meaning you will further benefit from peer learning.

Over the three-year period you will learn through:

  • lectures
  • seminars
  • workshops
  • practical assignments
  • e-learning portal.

Assessments on the programme have been designed to be clinically relevant and reflect nursing practice such as assessment of care needs, care planning, health promotion, physical assessment skills and reflection.

You will benefit from dedicated study and assessment weeks to avoid completion of assessment tasks during placements and will be provided with a choice of assessment tasks in each year to support inclusive learning practices. Tasks may include:

  • essays
  • care plans
  • presentations
  • case studies
  • online tests
  • picture essays
  • seen examinations
  • business or research proposals.

Apprentices on all programmes will need to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) to meet the apprenticeship standard alongside university assessments.

The community flat is a replica home environment where you’ll be able to practice skills and learn from other students while taking part in realistic training scenarios.

Every room is fitted with cameras and microphones, so that you can be directed and monitored from the control room, while the observation room provides the opportunity to review, playback and debrief.

Fees and funding information for apprentices

Course fees

As an apprentice, the cost of your learning programme is covered by your employer through their Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account.

Student finance

Higher and degree level apprentices are not eligible for any element of student finance. This is because they receive a salary instead of the student loan package. However, if you are experiencing any financial difficulties, please contact the Student Advice Service on 01273 642 888.

Learning support

Apprentices studying at Higher and degree level may be able to access funding in relation to additional support, but this is available through the university and not Disabled Students Allowance. Apprentices may also be able to apply for funding for work-based equipment and software. Please contact the Disability and Learning Support team on 01273 643 799.

Living costs and benefits

Higher and degree level apprentices must fulfil the standard eligibility criteria in order to apply for means tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit and Housing Benefit. If you have any questions about entitlement to benefits, please contact the Student Advice Service on 01273 642888.

Higher and degree level apprentices who are undertaking a full-time mode of study can be treated as being exempt from paying . Although some programmes require study on a day-release arrangement, this can still be classed as full-time study. You will need to obtain a letter from the Student Support Desk at any campus and send this to your Council Tax department when you enrol on the programme.

Other

I think the apprenticeship route into nursing is needed now more than ever as the current need for nurses grows. There is already a huge workforce of health care assistants within the NHS, who are highly skilled and keen to progress to higher grades within the organisation, but the traditional route into nursing is not suitable due to financial and family/care commitments.

Katie Wilmshurst, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

Occupational health screening and vaccinations
You will need to complete an occupational health screening and we strongly encourage that you get all of the required vaccinations. Particular vaccinations are a requirement of certain NHS placement providers and are in place to protect you and the patients. Without the appropriate vaccinations you will not be able to undertake some placements – and this may impact on your ability to complete your course. The list of required vaccinations is updated by the NHS and may change over the course of your studies.
