Sustainable Design and Practice

Sustainable design and practice are an fundamental to the circular economy - helping to extend product lifetimes, reduce global waste and use resources more efficiently.

We work with industry in the UK and abroad to work towards an environmentally sustainable society.

Our work

Healthcare waste solutions

Clinical waste management company , wanted to reduce the costs associated with recycling and incineration, and develop a new income stream from the launch of new products.

The were able to do this by taking a Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) with the University. KTP's are a world-leading programme that helps businesses innovate and succeed by connecting them to the UK's academic resources and expertise.

KTP with Medisort

Engagement with the KTP has set a foundation, from which we will build a more scientific basis for quality control and product development. The contacts made and disciplines learnt will stay with us forever.

Developing and commercialising an innovative water saving device

fits to a tap and reduces water consumption by up to twice as much as a standard eco aerating nozzle.

As a member of the University's Green Growth Platform, now known as , Waterblade worked closely with product design specialists from the University to improve the performance of their invention.

Using computer modelling and 3D printing, they were able to refine and test their product to maximise its performance and gain invaluable data to share with investors and clients.

Using waste to build a house

The 91¶¶Òõ Waste House is a building constructed using over 85% waste material and is a living laboratory for ecological architectural design. Demonstrating various principles of sustainable architecture and design, the building aims to prove that often undervalued and so-called ‘waste’ material has the potential to become a valuable resource.

The project was created in partnership with waste re-usage experts, and a range of specialists and waste-concern enterprises. Researchers found that there were many problematic practices leading to unnecessary waste, and they aimed to re-purpose discarded materials within the construction process. Old toothbrushes that had only been used once and thrown away, for example, were used for wall cavities.
