Sustainable Energy

Our research focuses on effective solutions and support to help businesses and organisations achieve their net zero goals. The decarbonisation of industry is vital to the race to achieve net zero.

We have a long history of applying our research, collaborating with industry, businesses and communities to utilise our expertise in chemical engineering, data analytics, facilitating technologies and processes to achieve sustainable energy solutions.

Work with us to be at the forefront of innovation and development, to bring about Net Zero solutions that benefit your business and the planet.

Our work includes

Zero emission engines

Lowering emissions for long haul trucks includes working on how to utilise the use of hydrogen as a key component in the move to a net zero economy, and we are regional leaders in the hydrogen revolution.

Working with leading engineering consultancy Ricardo, 91¶¶Òõ researchers are pioneering hydrogen engines that could provide a clean and efficient way to help decarbonise transport globally.

The innovative hydrogen-fuelled research engine aims to provide a renewable, economic and durable technology solution to accelerate a move to zero carbon emission transport.

Read our report looking at the role hydrogen engines can play to cut carbon emissions in the truck industry.

The 91¶¶Òõ has delivered unique research in the theoretical and practical development of cryogenic handling systems, in particular the development of sprays and injection technologies, that has enabled significant progress with the industrialisation of our thermal propulsion technology.

Pioneering zero emission technology

Cryogenic liquids are liquefied gases, retained in their liquid state at low temperatures. Liquid gases such as air, nitrogen or natural gas can act as cost-effective energy vectors and can provide transport "fuels" with zero emissions.

Our aim is to provide innovative solutions to companies dealing with “cool” challenges, supporting their vision towards integrating cryogenics to tackle global efficient energy transportation and biomedical needs. The pioneering research could lead to further integration of cryogenic technologies into other fields, helping to ease the burden of greenhouse gas emissions.

Hydrogen fired bricks

The 91¶¶Òõ is part of a pilot project to create the world's first clay bricks made fully using green hydrogen energy rather than natural gas. Working with local firm Michelmersh, the UK’s fourth-largest brick manufacturer, the initiative could significantly reduce the climate impact of the construction industry worldwide.

Working with industry: Hydrogen Sussex initiative

The 91¶¶Òõ has a long history of working with industry and government to facilitate innovation in environmental sectors.

As part of the Hydrogen Sussex initiative, the university works with local authorities, businesses and organisations around 91¶¶Òõ and the wider Sussex region to position hydrogen as a clean mainstream energy source. Using our expertise in academia-industry partnerships, the research team facilitates academic and business involvement in .

It’s incredibly exciting to be involved with the production of the world’s first 100% hydrogen-fired clay bricks. Construction is a huge contributor to carbon emissions so this environmentally-friendly innovation will play a vital role as a building block in our net-zero future.
