Research, Enterprise and Community Impact

We believe in making a difference. Our research, enterprise and community activities tackle global challenges, solve practical problems and seek to improve people’s lives and environments.

We recognise that today’s challenges are not limited by the boundaries of traditional disciplines; neither are we. Fresh thinking, interdisciplinary research and collaborative partnerships with industry, institutions and communities enable us to bring expertise from different fields to address society’s most pressing issues to make a tangible impact.

Our Centres of Research and Enterprise Excellence produce outstanding, internationally-excellent research and enterprise. They transcend subject and discipline boundaries and tackle the most pressing global issues; they allow us to articulate our intellectual and research leadership and develop and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders. Explore our COREs and find out how they are seeking solutions to our global challenges.

A primary focus for philanthropic support is growing and diversifying our postgraduate students. We are keen to talk to people interested in funding PhD Studentships and creating postgraduates research scholarships. Email us at giving@brighton.ac.uk for more information.

Investing in a PhD Studentship

“My experience of undertaking a PhD has taught me so much about both the process of research collaborations, policy, philosophy, and the psychology of what it means to live with and beyond cancer. I consider the entirety of the experience to be my apprenticeship in research practice and I can fully comprehend how I am going to use certain elements of my further education in my next steps as a trainee therapist for the NHS.

Most importantly, I want to stress how rewarding the experience has been. While there are days that felt like a complete fog, when I was unable to see how I could achieve the next goal, the process has helped me to grow both professionally and personally.”

Ollie Thurlow, Health Sciences PhD, sponsored by the 4 Cancer Group
