Requesting information

We are happy to answer your questions in line with current privacy legislation.

Requesting personal information

The Data Protection Act 2018 gives you the right to obtain confirmation as to whether we process personal data about you, receive a copy of your personal data held by us and obtain certain other information about how and why we process your personal data. The Information Commissioner has provided .

Requests for access to personal data can be verbal or in writing, we will require proof of your identity so that we release the information to the correct person. To request information, please complete a request form and email it to dataprotection@brighton.ac.uk.

Alternatively it can be posted to: Data Compliance Team, 91¶¶Òõ, 8th Floor Cockcroft Building, Lewes Road, 91¶¶Òõ BN2 4GJ

The Subject Access Request form is not obligatory but it designed to help us gather the information which we need to identify you, communicate with you and locate data about you. Failure to complete the form could delay processing of your request, as we may need to contact you for further information or clarification.

Study verification

If you are a student or former student seeking a replacement certificate, transcripts and other forms of verification of your study, please follow this process.

Exercising your data subject rights

Data subjects have a number of rights under the Data Protection Act, including the right:

  • To rectify inaccurate or incomplete personal information we hold on you.
  • to require the university to delete or stop processing your data, for example where the data is no longer necessary for the purposes of processing (see the form on the right for more information)
  • to restrict the processing of your personal data in certain ways
  • to withdraw consent where we have requested and obtained your consent.
  • to object to certain processing of your personal data by us, including the right to object to direct marketing, automated decision making and profiling
  • where our lawful basis is consent or performance of a contract we will allow portability of your data.

To exercise or your rights or for further information, please contact the Data Protection Officer dataprotection@brighton.ac.uk.

Once requested, the university will respond to the request without undue delay and within one month. Where the request is complex, the timeframe may be extended by a further two months. Should we need an extension we will notify you within one month of original receipt of the request, to explain why an extension may be necessary.

Requesting information about the university

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 provides a general right of access to all recorded information held by the 91¶¶Òõ. More information can be found on our Freedom of Information page.

In accordance with the provisions of the act, the university makes publicly available key university documents. These form part of the publication scheme. The university of 91¶¶Òõ also publishes a considerable amount of material through its university Information pages.

You can apply for information that is not available from the publication scheme or our information pages by sending a request via email to: foi@brighton.ac.uk.

This statement, revised annually, sets out the functions that are within the 91¶¶Òõ’s Library Service’s public task under the EU Directive on the Re-use of Public Sector Information 2015.

Other information requests

The university regularly receives enquiries from parents and other third parties regarding students or staff, however in most cases the Data Protection Act strictly prevents us from disclosing information.

There are however some circumstances where disclosure would be allowed.

If you are from a criminal investigation agency – please contact us on the below email address and attach an appropriately authorised DPA.

If you have consent from the student or staff member to information being shared, or you have legal authority to request data on others, please complete this (.docx), this helps us to ensure that the individual is aware of the data share and/or has consented to the data share and/or that another legal authority is in place to allow for the data share.

There is no charge for this however if your request is unfounded or excessive or repeats previous requests then there may be an administrative charge – you will be informed of this as soon as we are able to confirm the nature of your request.

Employers and agencies:

If you are an employer or recruitment agency requiring verification of study for a former student, you should request this via (HEDD). This is an online verification service which verifies the 91¶¶Òõ awards. The employer or agency will need to register to use this service, and the former student will need to have completed a   which the employer or agency will have to upload in order to give us permission to release confirmation of your qualifications.
