Counselling CPD

Developing a Therapeutic Relationship and Counselling Skills

This short course has been designed to help you explore what counselling skills are and how they help people deal with difficult issues in their lives.

It is for people with little or no experience of counselling who wish to explore how to help others.

This module may also appeal to those who use counselling skills in their present work and those who intend to work in a helping capacity.

Successfully completing this course means you’ll be awarded 20 level-6 credits, equivalent to a final year module of an undergraduate degree. It also fulfils one of the entry requirements for the 91¶¶Òõ’s postgraduate diplomas in Humanistic Counselling and Psychotherapy, and in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, for which potential candidates need to complete an accredited face-to-face counselling skills course.

Thinking of applying?

We are full for the course starting September 2025. Your next opportunity to start this course is February 2026. Applications will open in June.

Learning and teaching on the course

You will explore some of the ideas from both humanistic and psychodynamic theory and how these ideas can help people find meaning in their lives. You will also engage in experiential work where you work in small groups within a ‘fishbowl’. This is where you work with a colleague from the course and other people in the group and the facilitator gives you feedback to help you develop your counselling skills.

We offer two start dates – September and February.

Both courses run over 12 weeks (excluding winter and spring break depending on which course you choose).

You'll be based at our Moulsecoomb campus in 91¶¶Òõ, from 5.30–8.30pm each week. For the first week you'll join us at 4.30pm when you will meet lecturers, have an introduction to the library and get to know the campus.

Why choose this course?

You will have the chance to explore what counselling skills are and how to use them to help people in a variety of settings where you are engaged in working with people. If you are intending to undertake either of the postgraduate diplomas in counselling at the 91¶¶Òõ, then this module will be invaluable in assisting you in your choice between the two courses that you might wish to study, and, in addition, enables you to explore the purpose and use of counselling skills.
