Preparing you for legal practice

Here at 91¶¶Òõ Law School, we place emphasis on practical learning to benefit our students and local communities.

Not only do we incorporate practical legal skills into our teaching practices and course content, we also offer extra-curricular activities so you have more opportunities to develop those legal skills. Through internal, local and national competitions, we give you the chance to showcase these skills and network with the legal community.

You will also have an opportunity to participate in the 91¶¶Òõ Legal Clinic, where you will work with members of local law firms and barristers chambers on cases for members of the local community. This provides you with valuable work experience and the chance to put these legal skills into practice.

As someone involved in the training of potential barristers, the skills the students acquire are invaluable and an entry on a cv that an applicant has participated in clinic is a hallmark of commitment, the acquisition of client care skills and the ability to apply black letter law to real problems.

Mooting

Mooting is a mock trial where two sides argue a point of law in front of an acting judge, who will then decide which side wins based on the presentations made.

You'll learn how to moot on our Practical Legal Skills 2 module, but you can also take part in extra-curricular mooting competitions against other universities.

Mooting is a vital skill to learn if you want to become a barrister, but it's also desirable if you'd like to work in a law firm because you'll develop legal skills of analysis and interpretation. It's also a way to practise and improve your public speaking.

Negotiation

Improve your confidence and gain access to an extended legal network through our negotiation programme.

Negotiation is a key legal skill – many legal disputes do not end up in the courts, but instead are resolved by some form of agreement. We give you an opportunity to prepare, apply and then practise your negotiation skills.

We run a competition that's sponsored by solicitors' firms who then come to 91¶¶Òõ Law School and judge the final. The top teams go on to represent the university at the national negotiation competition, which is sponsored by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution.

Client interviewing skills

Client interviewing is an important part of our course content and helps you establish a relationship with the client, learn how to identify the nature of the legal problem, and then obtain the relevant information from the client in order to reach a potential solution.

We also have an extra-curricular client interviewing programme to help you further develop the essential skill of interviewing and advising clients. Sponsored by a local law firm, the programme culminates in an internal competition and the winning students proceed to represent the university in the national Law Society competition.

Law Societies

Joining a society is a great way for our students to add to their overall experience whilst at university, providing opportunities to develop your legal knowledge and skills, network and make connections and take part in extra curricular activities.

is a thriving community run by a committee of law students. With support from the Students’ Union, it organises an exciting schedule of social and educational events.

Throughout the year, the society host various events relating to wellbeing, development and careers as well as workshops with industry professionals. Members have previously enjoyed visits to Lewes Crown Court, 91¶¶Òõ Magistrates Court and the Houses of Parliament.

Through initiatives such as these, the society provides excellent opportunities for personal development and for networking with other students interested in a career in law.

Student Experience: 91¶¶Òõ Legal Clinic

"I always had a passion for helping others and when I saw the 91¶¶Òõ offers the Justice in Practice: Community Legal Clinic Module with additional module options of Family Law and Family Justice and Criminal Evidence, I knew this was the perfect course for me.

"As part of this module, I had the opportunity to take part in the legal clinic. I was able to provide legal advice and communicated with clients to create strategies for their next steps or to resolve their legal matters. I drafted relevant legal documentation to send to clients; for example, client care letters, research reports and letters of advice.

"Studying at the 91¶¶Òõ has been the best experience of my life. I have been able to make friends, join exciting and innovative societies, gain real world legal experience, learn about many aspects of the law, and be part of something bigger than myself."

Law graduate Lilly Wells

Lily Wells, law graduate.

Getting involved in the legal clinic really motivated me in my future career and gave me the direction I needed to go forward. It also gives the best insight on how to research for real cases and looking at every angle possible within the law. Additionally, and the most important thing to take away, is that you’re helping people who need your help."
