The role of different visual clues in anticipation in tennis

My research

In my research, the aim is to quantify the contribution of specific information sources that tennis players use when trying to anticipate the direction of their opponent’s stroke, when looking at their movement only up to the ball-racket contact. In the first study, I will test the different ways anticipation training can be delivered in terms of different display types the stroke can be displayed on (laptop vs. virtual screen) and the response (button press vs. full tennis stroke) the learners need to take. This will help coaches and researchers to identify the best training and experiment setups to improve and examine anticipation. The second and third study will aim to specifically quantify the contribution of the three different sources of information researchers assume exist. These are, global, local and region independent information. PCA will be used to identify direction specific dynamic structures in the strokes and neutralisation and/or spatial occlusion to be able to display the different sources of information separately.
