91¶¶Òõ's law school is an intellectually exciting and engaging environment for your PhD research.

We understand the value of postgraduate research study and the vital role of legal research and critical thinking in the many fields of international law. We understand the importance of your postgraduate degree to your career and the part we can play in it. 

Our postgraduate doctoral students play a key role in the organisation. They are integrated into research groups and are able to benefit from the school's wider network of legal professional, academic lawyers and community beneficiaries. We also offer PhD training and development workshops designed to help progress your research career.

Your PhD study will be supported throughout by expert academic specialists and an interdisciplinary training framework. The expertise of our academic supervisors spans a range of contemporary specialisms, from the overlap between business and human rights, to the role of international law in obtaining climate justice.

Details of our doctoral postgraduate research degree in law

As a PhD law researcher at the 91¶¶Òõ, your postgraduate study will benefit from professional and supportive academic supervision. You can also take advantage of a thriving research environment. You will be able to participate in research workshops and PhD research work-in-progress seminars, where you can receive constructive feedback on your research project and benefit from the full range of expertise at your disposal. 

Research supervision for your PhD

Research supervision will normally comprise two members of academic staff with a maximum of three. Depending on your research specialism one of those supervisors may be from another school, another research institution, or an external partner from government or the law profession.  

You will establish your supervisor from the early stages of application and they will support you throughout your programme of study, helping you carry out your research and prepare for the next stage of your career.

Research skills and research training

The independent research programme is balanced and enhanced with a range of support from our academic community. You and your fellow postgraduate researchers will have the opportunity to attend and present at regular seminar sessions with guests from across the world of business management research. The PhD programme will give you the opportunity to build research skills as well as developing transferable skills essential for modern business environments.

As a member of the 91¶¶Òõ Doctoral College, you will benefit from regular opportunities on a training programme devised for postgraduate researchers, designed to support them at all stages of the PhD and help them achieve their career goals. Attendance at appropriate workshops within this programme is encouraged, as is contribution to the schools’ various seminar series. Academic and technical staff also provide more subject-specific training. 

Postgraduate degree resources for law

You will benefit from access to international research resources. A contemporary range of electronic resources is available via the university’s Online Library, as well as to the physical book and journal collections housed within campus libraries. The library services are connected to national and international collections and students also have the option of inter-library loans.

We are based in the recently-built Elm House, a five-storey building at the university's modern campus in the bustling and progressive tourist city of 91¶¶Òõ and Hove.

Research is at the heart of our mission as a university law school, demonstrated by an extensive record of highly-recognised intellectual contributions, broadly associated with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME). Within these, the school evidences thought leadership around action to reduce poverty, improved education, gender equality, responsible consumption, energy, and industry/infrastructure. 

As a PhD candidate in law, you will have the opportunity to be a member of our Research Excellence Groups (REGs) the most relevant to our law PhD students being the , which brings together academics from law and related social science disciplines who are active in the fields of social justice and accountability.

Whatever your area of research, there are opportunities to connect across the university's wide range of research in premium departments, with regular invitations to the PhD community from related disciplinary interests fostered in our university-wide research centres (COREs) and research groups (REGs).

Applications will be considered for the field of Maritime and Commercial Law, particularly the areas of International Trade, Trade Finance, Carriage of Goods by Sea, Marine Insurance, Digital Innovation in Shipping (AI, Fintech, Autonomous Vessels) Shipping and the Environment and Multimodal Transportation.

Victor is keen to supervise potential PhD students interested researching corporate governance, CSR, ESG, corporate law/commercial law, consumer protection, business and human rights, fintech, financial inclusion, artificial intelligence on financial systems, financial law and regulation.

I will be delighted to supervise PhD students interested in gender-based violence, especially where it involves violence against women and girls (in particular domestic violence and abuse, sexual violence, and so-called 'honour' crime), the criminal justice response to such violence, and the impact on survivor-victim journeys. Linked to this, I also welcome PhD students with an interest in justice-involved individuals, particularly women and their families.

My most recent doctoral student successfully passed her viva in January 2019. Her doctorate assesses the impact of cuts to Legal Aid on the administration of immigration law and asylum cases.

I am now supervising a student examining issues around anonymity for both complainants and defendants in rape trials.

I would be interested in supervising other doctoral students with interests in Legal Aid, or in research areas covering crime, criminal justice, restorative justice, or youth offending.

Making an application

Fees and funding

 Funding

Undertaking research study will require university fees as well as support for your research activities and plans for subsistence during full or part-time study.

Funding sources include self-funding, funding by an employer or industrial partners; there are competitive funding opportunities available in most disciplines through, for example, our own university studentships or national (UK) research councils. International students may have options from either their home-based research funding organisations or may be eligible for some UK funds.
