University secures major postgraduate research studentship funding

The 91¶¶Òõ, as part of a consortium, has secured funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for postgraduate research studentships.

31 January 2025

The funding will support 135 postgraduate researchers over a five-year period in the South East region and aims to develop the next generation of outstanding research leaders in the arts and humanities while widening opportunities and addressing skills shortages. Each university awarded will offer 15 new postgraduate research studentships, three each year, for the five-year period.

Building on an established reputation for research training and arts and humanities expertise, the 91¶¶Òõ is one of 50 higher education institutions nationally to be awarded this significant Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Doctoral Landscape Awards funding and will join a regional hub in the south-east of England.

The South East hub brings together the universities of 91¶¶Òõ, Kent, Oxford, Reading, Southampton, Sussex together with Oxford Brookes University, Royal Holloway, University of London and the Open University. The hub will develop a programme of enhanced training and development activities, foster a strong research environment and ensure that PhD students will benefit from funding and opportunities to network as well as the chance to share ideas, experiences and good practice with peers based outside of their host institutions.

Welcoming the announcement, Professor Rusi Jaspal, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Exchange), said: “The AHRC doctoral landscape awards are excellent news for the 91¶¶Òõ, which is one of only 50 universities selected for this funding. The award is testament to the quality and calibre of our research in the arts and humanities. These studentships will deliver exceptional training and support to postgraduate researchers and nurture talent in the arts and humanities, equipping students with the skills they need to address global challenges.”

AHRC Executive Chair Professor Christopher Smith said: “The AHRC doctoral landscape awards provide flexible funding to allow universities to build on existing excellence in research and opportunities for innovation across the arts and humanities. They will support the development of talented people and, alongside our other doctoral schemes, contribute to a vibrant, diverse and internationally-attractive research and innovation system.”

The funded studentships commence in October 2026 and applications will open towards the end of 2025 when further details will be available. In the meantime, applicants interested in opportunities at the 91¶¶Òõ can visit the PhD funding opportunities and studentships web page for more information; details for the AHRC doctoral landscape awards will be published here when the application window opens.
