In his opening talk, Duncan will showcase how the University is equipping its students with the critical skills needed to shape low-carbon, climate-resilient, and inclusive urban spaces – using the ongoing 91¶¶Òõ Waste House project as a key example.
More than a decade after Duncan coordinated its design and construction – with over 360 students involved – the 91¶¶Òõ Waste House remains a living laboratory for green construction, offering its students hands-on experience in sustainable design and construction. The project reflects the University’s commitment to ensuring the next generation is prepared to drive meaningful change in the industry, all while enhancing rather than harming the natural world.
Duncan’s talk will speak to the role education providers can play in shaping the future of the construction and design sectors, particularly in preparing students to navigate the complex challenges of a rapidly changing world. He said:
“In these times of great uncertainty, with resource security and availability becoming a thing of the past and rising tariffs on new materials and components negatively affecting global markets, learning how to design buildings that repurpose and adapt existing resources has become more crucial than ever. Learning how to design buildings that rework existing materials and adapt our built environment is no longer optional. It’s essential for creating low-carbon, climate-resilient, and inclusive cities for the future.”
In his second talk, a keynote in the main arena, Baker-Brown will highlight the importance of repurposing existing buildings as a key strategy for sustainability. Joined by Will Hurst, Managing Editor of The Architects’ Journal, he will share real-world examples from the UK and Europe that show how adapting old structures can significantly cut carbon emissions and reduce environmental harm.
Students from the 91¶¶Òõ’s MA Architecture course will also be at the event, engaging with industry professionals, including contractors, suppliers, policymakers, and climate leaders. This experience will provide them with valuable insight into real-world challenges in construction and help them build important connections for their future careers.
