91¶¶Òõ celebrates 50 years of driving business innovation

For nearly half a century the 91¶¶Òõ has fueled local business innovation through Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme.

22 April 2025

As one of the trailblazers since the programme's inception, the university has cemented its reputation as a beacon for research-led business growth, propelling economic and societal progress across the Sussex region and beyond.

KTPs, backed by , connect businesses with academic expertise and funding, empowering them to solve complex challenges and boost competitiveness.

The 91¶¶Òõ proudly boasts a 100% success rate in securing funding for these collaborations, unlocking over £24 million for more than 280 projects.

In today’s turbulent and testing economic landscape, the ability to adapt and innovate is crucial for business survival, making KTPs a more relevant tool than ever for organisations aiming to future-proof operations and achieve sustainable growth.

Through KTPs, businesses and charities can access up to 75% in government funding, while leveraging cutting-edge academic expertise to drive innovation and solve practical challenges.

This model is proven to work: Innovate UK reports that 83% of businesses involved in KTPs have seen or expect increased productivity, profitability, employment or turnover. Some 70% improved existing products or services, while 57% developed new ones ready for market.

The 91¶¶Òõ has played a pivotal role in delivering high impact KTPs across a diverse range of sectors, from advanced engineering and environmental sustainability to business strategies and digital transformation. Notably, 82% of its projects have benefited Sussex-based businesses, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of regional economic development.

Innovation in action: case studies from the south-east

  • Lankelma: This specialist in cone penetration testing for the pre-construction sector developed leading-edge technology to future-proof its business through a KTP. "The success of the project will enable us to offer higher quality, improved reliability and a more bespoke solution to our clients’ needs,” said Chris Dimelow, General Manager.
  • Judges: A KTP-driven digital transformation revolutionised the company’s strategic management and marketing, leading to increased profitability. "The KTP has exceeded our wildest expectations in terms of commercial return, staff recruitment, retention, and market reputation," said Managing Director Graeme Wolford.
  • Falcon Coffees: The university's researchers helped Falcon Coffees develop data-driven approaches to enhance supply chain transparency, improve sustainability, and empower coffee-growing communities, demonstrating the university's commitment to tackling global sustainability challenges.

While KTPs are often associated with science and engineering, more than a quarter of the 91¶¶Òõ's recent partnerships have focused on business management innovation. These collaborations are helping companies refine operations and adopt sustainable growth strategies to drive long-term success.

Professor Andrew Lloyd, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who has been involved with the 91¶¶Òõ’s KTPs from their early days said: "KTPs are a powerful engine for innovation and economic success. A KTP is about working closely with a company to solve real-world problems, and this collaborative mindset is key to making the programme work. Our strong relationships with businesses and our commitment to delivering on promises have been central to our success and helped make the 91¶¶Òõ a key driver of national progress."

As the KTP programme celebrates its 50th anniversary, the 91¶¶Òõ remains committed to helping businesses and charities navigate a fast-changing world. The university’s dedication to research-led business transformation ensures that companies have access to the tools and knowledge to thrive.
