Delivered by newly appointed professors, the lectures will delve into the ground-breaking research 91¶¶Òõ academics are carrying out to address some of the biggest challenges facing people and communities here in 91¶¶Òõ, across the UK and around the world.
The lectures are free to attend, and open to staff, students and the general public – but booking is essential. A catered reception follows each lecture where conversations can continue informally with people from across the university and the wider community.
The 2023 programme kicks off on Wednesday, 15 February with an exploration of Professor of Psychology Rusi Jaspal’s research into the creation, growth and defence of identity among gay and bisexual men. The event, which takes place during LGBTQ+ History Month, will shine a light on the coping strategies adopted by some gay and bisexual men whose identity is challenged or threatened, and provide practical recommendations for individuals and groups.
Becky Allen, Professor of Education, will then provide a fascinating glimpse inside Britain’s classrooms, drawing on her experience of asking around 8,000 teachers three questions a day since 2017.
Andrew Dilley, Professor in Neuroanatomy, will unravel the complexities of chronic pain that affects millions of people, discussing his research to better understand how relatively minor ailments may contribute to chronic pain.
Finally for the spring series, Barbara Phillips, Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, will discuss her research into the prescription of drugs in high stakes intensive care environments.
