Intro

This is a part-time Professional Practice degree top-up course for healthcare practitioners wanting to obtain an academic and professional qualification.

A range of modules means you can create your own study programme to suit your professional and personal aspirations.

We are known for our flexible approaches to practice-based learning, with course durations and intensities that can be adapted to your individual needs and outside commitments. 

You will be taught and supported by passionate and experienced staff, who are informed by current research, meaning teaching is up to date and adheres to best practice.

Entry requirements

Degree and experience

Applicants to the course are expected to:

1. Have a health or social care-related Diploma of Higher Education, or foundation degree (minimum of 120 level 5 credits)
Or
Hold a current registered qualification in health or social care with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Health and Social Care Professions Council or equivalent PSRB

2. Be currently practising in the UK in a suitable practice setting, but additional module-specific rules may apply

3. Have six months’ post-qualifying experience.

English language requirements

Course content

Course structure

The Professional Practice degree BSc(Hons) award carries a total of 120 level 6 credits. You will complete the following:

  • Option modules (60 credits)
  • Evidence-based Practice (20 credits)
  • Quality Improvement Proposal (40 credits)

Most of the modules are taught over one semester. Some of them require practical experience for enrolment. Teaching and assessment methods also vary.

  • Evidence-based Practice

    This module will enhance your critical understanding of evidence-based practice in health and social care. You will develop the knowledge and skills to search for and critically appraise different forms of published evidence and make recommendations for using research, quality improvement, audit, service evaluation and grey literature in academic assignments and health and social care practice.

  • Quality Improvement Proposal

    In this module you will prepare a quality improvement proposal around a topic linked to your expertise and area of practice. You will connect the themes and perspectives covered in your course to real-world contexts and develop strategies to effectively organise, analyse and evaluate information and data.

Options*

  • Supporting Learners in Practice Preparation Module

    This module will equip you to become a competent practice supervisor, assessor, mentor, educator or sign-off mentor and develop your critical awareness of the mentoring role. Preparation for this role will include establishing effective working relationships; facilitating learning; assessment and accountability; evaluating learning; creating an environment for learning; and leadership skills for education.

  • End of Life Care for People with Long-term Conditions

    Drawing on established palliative care principles, this module will help you develop the understanding and skills required in end of life care. You will focus on supporting people with non-cancer-related long-term and life-limiting conditions. You’ll also learn to recognise carers needs and support them through the patient’s last months of life.

  • End of Life: Principles of Care

    This module focuses on caring for people who are dying and teaches you how to review the basis of your practice. You will be presented with challenges around approaches to assessing and planning care so you can develop critical reflective and analytical skills. You will gain a sound theoretical knowledge of key issues and concepts affecting practice which will enhance your knowledge and competence.

  • Health Law and Ethics for Professional Practice

    This module will increase your depth of knowledge and critical understanding of professional and ethico-legal issues with a focus on the rapidly changing culture of the healthcare system. It will support you in actively encouraging equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities and enable you to promote the interests of your clients, particularly when their rights have been compromised.

  • Leadership and Managing within Care Organisations

    In this module you will explore various aspects of leadership within the care sector. You’ll get the opportunity to identify and analyse management and leadership issues in the context of care organisations so that you are able to achieve, maintain and develop high quality client care.

  • Return to Practice for Nursing

    Return to Practice for Nursing enables lapsed nurses to renew registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council and re-enter registered practice. It will provide you with the necessary competence, knowledge, skills and confidence to maintain safe and effective standards of client care.

  • Return to Field of Practice and Specialist Community Public Health Nursing

    This module enables lapsed nurses to renew registration with the NMC and re-enter registered practice as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. You will gain the up-to-date competence, knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to maintain safe and effective standards of client care.

  • Recognising and Accrediting Work-Related Learning (RAWL)

    In this module you will critically assess your practice and/or experience during a recent workplace or occupational learning initiative such as an in-house workshop, conference or course. This will enable you to evaluate the benefits of work or occupation-related learning and demonstrate evidence of personal growth and development in your ability to meet organisational objectives and role functions.

  • Health Promotion for Public Health Improvement

    You will examine the foundations and practical application of health promotion and enabling healthy behaviours in this module. You will consider your role as a positive health promoter and identify the challenges this demands of you and public health and health improvement teams. You will be encouraged to look beyond individual health behaviours by considering micro, meso and macro perspectives of public health systems and provision.

*Option modules are indicative and may change, depending on timetabling and staff availability.

You may also access modules from the CPE programme which include modules offered by the Clinical Practice BSc(Hons).

What's included in your tuition fee

  • An initial set of specialist uniforms where appropriate.
  • DBS checks and occupational health checks.
  • Where health course includes a placement: UK students – travel costs which are over and above your daily journey to university and dual accommodation costs may be reimbursed by .
  • Course books, magazines and journals are available in the university libraries. You do not need to have your own copies. See the for an up-to-date list of key subject journals and databases.
  • You will have access to computers and necessary software on campus – and can borrow a laptop from us if yours is broken or you don’t have a computer at home. Specialist equipment is provided to cover essential learning.

Additional course costs

  • Where health course includes a placement: Overseas students are not covered by the NHS learning support fund. This means that any additional travel or accommodation costs for this course will be your responsibility. Travel to placement may be up to 90 mins each way/travel on public transport at peak time cost, and you may incur additional accommodation and living costs if staying away from your usual home base for the length of your placement.
  • You’ll need to budget for printing and stationery for personal study, and books if you decide to buy your own.   
  • In most cases coursework submissions are electronic but you may wish to print notes which would involve an extra cost.   
  • Many students choose to buy their own hardware, software and accessories. The amount spent will depend on your individual choices, but this expenditure is not essential to pass any of our courses.

Location and student life

Campus where this course is taught

Falmer campus

Set in the South Downs, our Falmer campus is around four miles from 91¶¶Òõ city centre. Students based here study a range of subjects including education studies, teaching, sport and exercise, nursing and midwifery, allied health professions and medicine. 91¶¶Òõ & Hove Albion’s Amex stadium and beautiful Stanmer Park are right next door.

Falmer campus has two halls of residence on site, as well as a library, restaurant, cafes and the Students’ Union shop and bar.

The campus has extensive sport and leisure facilities including a fitness suite, swimming pool, outdoor grass football and rugby pitches, sports hall, tennis and badminton courts, and dance and spin studios.

Specialist learning facilities at Falmer include the curriculum centre used by teaching and education students, which houses over 30,000 teaching resources, clinical skills and simulation suites used by health students, and labs and a strength and conditioning suite used by sport students. We’ve recently redeveloped the Falmer campus – learn more about the many facilities our students have access to.

Cycle lanes link Falmer with our other campuses and the city centre. There are regular bus services to the city centre and other campuses. Falmer train station is right next to campus and a nine-minute journey to central 91¶¶Òõ.

We have self-catered halls on all our campuses, within minutes of your classes, and other options that are very nearby.

You can apply for any of our halls, but the options closest to your study location are:

  • Paddock Field and Great Wilkins halls offer a range of rooms on our Falmer campus, minutes from your classes, and on the edge of the South Downs.
  • Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Falmer campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.

It's only 50 minutes by train from 91¶¶Òõ to central London and there are daily direct trains to Bristol, Bedford, Cambridge, Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Southampton.
