Intro

The Global Health programme at BSMS offers individuals an opportunity to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to contribute to the improvement of health and the achievement of equity in health globally.

To effectively address the wider determinants of health, individuals need to have an understanding of disciplines as wide-ranging as epidemiology, statistics, economics, anthropology, and politics. At BSMS, we draw on expertise from across the 91¶¶Òõ and University of Sussex to offer a vibrant programme that enables students to build a solid foundation in knowledge and skills.

We work closely with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), one of the world's leading organisations for research on international development, and with the Sussex Centre for Global Health Policy. BSMS students have the chance to study optional modules with these institutions, and learn about the current challenges in policy and practice.

The MSc dissertation project provides students with an opportunity to gain real-world experience of global health research and policy-making processes. With established links with 91¶¶Òõ-based non-governmental organisations (e.g. AIDS Alliance, Target TB, Health Partners International) and overseas partners (e.g. Lusaka-91¶¶Òõ Link project, Podoconiosis Control Initiative), student research has the potential to inform current work in global health as well as improving future employment prospects.

Global Health at BSMS is emerging as a national leader in global health research. Professor Mel Newport and Dr Gail Davey have recently been awarded several prestigious research grants, including MRC/DfID/Wellcome Trust-funded randomised controlled trial of podoconiosis treatment in northern Ethiopia and MRC-funded mapping of podoconiosis susceptibility genes. As well as learning skills fundamental to academic success (such as writing proposals and grant applications), students have the opportunity to be involved in existing research projects.

For the MSc dissertation project, students can choose to do primary research, secondary data analysis, literature review or policy analysis. Several 2011-2012 MSc students have given oral and poster presentations at national conferences, and are writing up their findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Course content

Course structure

The Global Health programme brings together experts from disciplines within and beyond the health sciences to deliver a vibrant programme that will appeal widely, covering topics such as: poverty; inequalities and health; cultural understandings of health and healing; emerging infectious diseases; global disease burden of infectious and non-communicable disease; climate change and health; and the relationship between disease, globalisation and global governance.

We use dynamic and interactive teaching methods with a focus on student participation and active learning. Sessions use case studies and debates alongside current evidence and insights from the field to facilitate student understanding of global health issues. Students are encouraged to be self-directed and manage their own learning through making use of the wide range of available learning resources at BSMS. The dissertation allows students to develop an area of expertise through the in-depth focus on a topic of their particular interest.

Dissertations can be undertaken in a range of academic, governmental and civil society settings, and students can choose to be based overseas.

Global Health Principles provides the foundations for the study of global health and develops understanding of the diversity of factors that can impact the health of individuals and societies.
