Graduate schemes

Graduate schemes are usually run by large organisations in both the public and private sector. You will be given a permanent, paid job and follow a structured training programme for the first few years of your employment.

When will I apply?

Recruitment can start as early as June of your penultimate year. Some companies recruit later.

Closing dates vary widely. Some close early depending on numbers of applicants. Some will keep to their advertised closing date. The earlier you apply the better.

Some schemes reopen for further application if the first round did not deliver sufficient quality applications.

Where can I find graduate schemes advertised?

You will also find graduate schemes advertised on our vacancy service and external sites:

  • has a dedicated graduate schemes page with the latest vacancies and background information on graduate scheme recruitment.
  • LinkedIn enables you to follow companies you are interested in and get updates on their recruitment and other news.
  • includes graduate schemes and internships.
  • allows you to search for graduate schemes and sign up for alerts.
  •  has opportunities for biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering (various disciplines), mathematics and physics graduates.

Recruitment agencies

Some agencies recruit for specific sectors, while others operate across a range of industries. The impression you make on the agency staff may influence the opportunities they offer you. Bear this in mind when you contact them. Also, you should never be asked to pay to use a recruitment agency.

  •  allows you to search for agencies by city or by county.
  •  allows you to search for agencies in your local area or further afield.
