Safe sex

Your safety is paramount while you're at university.

Sexual health

Contraception

You can access free contraception via these sexual health clinics:

Under 25s can access free condoms through the C-Card Scheme which operates in .

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It can be accessed through your GP or a sexual health clinic. The sooner you access emergency contraception, the more likely it is to be effective. If you're under 25, emergency contraception is free from some pharmacies.

PEP/PrEP

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a treatment that can stop HIV infection after the virus has entered a person's body.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a pill taken by HIV-negative people before and after sex that reduces the risk of getting HIV.

STI testing

At Moulsecoomb campus you can access a , offering at-home testing kits for those who do not have symptoms. You can find the machine in the Mezz food hub, Cockroft Building.

If you would like a routine sexual health check-up you can order a self-testing kit online:

If you have symptoms or have been in contact with an infection then it's best to contact a clinic for more advice:

Seeing a doctor

If you are worried about sexual health issues, you are advised to go to your local sexual health clinic or make an appointment to see your own doctor. If you do not have a local doctor, find out how to register with a doctor.

Students' Union

The Students' Union in conjunction with the NHS run sexual health testing at the Moulsecoomb campus at specific times during the academic year. NHS staff provide information and advice about sexual health and they will be able to discuss any concerns you may have. You will be able to pick up free condoms and lube, and will also have access to free chlamydia testing kits. All events are term-time only.

NHS advice

The NHS also offers information and advice about .

Sexual violence

If you have experienced any form of sexual violence, try to remember that this is not your fault and you don’t have to go through this alone. Support is available from your university and from local specialist services.

Understanding consent

A person consents to sex if that person 'agrees by choice and has the freedom and capacity to make that choice'. A person can also consent to one form of sexual activity but not to another, and they have the right to say no at any time.

The law clearly states that having any kind of sex without getting consent is illegal, and sexual activity without consent is rape or sexual assault. It is also a crime to target people who are under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
