Greener living

The 91¶¶Òõ is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the south-east coast, bordering the stunning South Downs national park.

We see more evidence every day of the negative human impact on our fragile ecosystems. Here at 91¶¶Òõ, we aim to redress the balance, with practical initiatives to keep all members of our fast-growing university informed and involved.

Sustainability

With 17,000 students and 2,150 staff at the 91¶¶Òõ, it is critically important that we realise the significant impact of a community this size on our environment. Every one of us has a part to play in order to better conserve resources and reduce pollution.

This is why we define sustainability as one of our core values that we are continually researching and putting into practice.

Our sustainability pages detail much of the work that we do towards achieving sustainability as an institution.

Recycling

Our aim is to promote a zero waste culture of ‘rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle’, in order to significantly reduce waste and increase recycling across all areas of the university estate.

We have committed to recycle 60% of our waste by December 2025 and have invested heavily in waste and recycling facilities which are standardised across the entire university. The bins are always located in pairs (one recycling and one waste bin), making the choice to recycle just as easy as throwing something away.

Travel and transport

We encourage students, staff and visitors to travel as sustainably as possible to the university to reduce our impact on the environment, carbon emissions and improve health and wellbeing.

One of the key aims of the university's Travel Plan Strategy is to reduce single occupancy vehicle – i.e. students  or staff driving to campus alone.

We provide information for students across all campuses on travelling to uni. Visit the for information and advice on travelling to uni by foot, public transport and car-sharing, as well as student discounts.
