Leaving accommodation early

This page outlines the steps you need to follow if you are leaving either university managed accommodation or private sector accommodation early.

Leaving university managed accommodation early

Withdrawing from university

If you withdraw or intermit from your studies, we will terminate your accommodation agreement once you have formally withdrawn, completed a termination form and returned your keys/key card to your hall’s reception (if applicable). You can complete a termination form at your halls reception desk when you move out, or you can (pdf) and email it to the Accommodation Office at accommodation@brighton.ac.uk.

Depending on the date you move out, you may be due a refund, or you may owe some rent. We will confirm this with you after your agreement has been terminated. A £50 termination fee applies, you will be instructed on how to pay this after your agreement is terminated.

Moving out early but continuing your studies

If you decide to move out but you are not withdrawing from the university, you will remain liable for the rent until the end of the contract unless a suitable replacement student is found. You are responsible for finding a replacement tenant, but the university can help with this if the room has been vacated. A replacement tenant must be a full-time 91¶¶Òõ student, who does not already have a contract with us, does not have any rent arrears with the university and passes reference checks.

When you move out you will need to complete a termination form and return your keys/key card to your hall’s reception (if applicable). You can complete a termination form at your halls reception desk when you move out, or you can (pdf) and send it to the Accommodation Office by email on accommodation@brighton.ac.uk.

You will continue to be charged rent for the room unless another student agrees to take over the contract. If another student moves in we will end your liability from the date that the new student moves in.

If you find replacement tenant, a £25 termination fee will apply. If the university find a replacement tenant, a £50 termination fee will apply.

You can look for a replacement student yourself by advertising the room on , for example.

Rent refunds and fees

If you have overpaid any rent we will refund this to you, after deducting the termination fee and any other applicable fees. Any refunds will be made to the card or bank account used to pay for your rent, so please take time to ensure that these details are correct. You can do so by contacting the Income team on income@brighton.ac.uk.

If you owe a remaining balance, you will be instructed on how to make payment.

Please note that we expect you to thoroughly clean and clear your room of all belongings before moving out. Failure to clean and clear your room may result in end of tenancy cleaning and rubbish clearance charges.

If you fail to return your keys or key card, you will be charged for a replacement.

Leaving private sector accommodation early

f you plan to move out early you should contact your landlord or letting agency for advice. You may advertise your room on .
