Any student who is undertaking a period of work or study abroad is eligible to receiving Turing funding; undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students. You can be doing a study abroad exchange, or a work placement. The placement does not need to be a credit bearing part of your course (for example it can be a summer school). The mobility should be between 4 weeks and 12 months in duration and (for this academic year) finish before 31 August 2023.

The amount you can receive depends on the destination, the duration, and whether you are identified as a disadvantaged student.

Monthly amounts range from £335 to £665.

Disadvantaged students will also be eligible for a travel grant to cover direct travel costs, dependent on the distance travelled. There is also funding available for exceptional costs, such as passports and visas.

Disadvantaged students are especially encouraged to get in touch with the Turing Scheme if they are concerned about the costs involved in undertaking an overseas mobility opportunity.

Turing Scheme funding allows you to travel anywhere in the world (outside the UK) as long as it is not a location advised against travel to by the FCDO.

It depends on where you’re going! Check the gov.uk website for guidance for UK students studying abroad in the EU and advice for UK nationals living abroad.

You can apply for full student finance as usual. You should not need to pay additional tuition fees in relation to a study placement abroad as you still pay your tuition fees to your home institution.

Once you have secured a placement or study abroad opportunity you can then apply for funding from the Turing Scheme to assist with your living costs.

It is highly unlikely that the Turing funding will cover all of your costs and you may need to rely on savings or family assistance. Make sure you budget carefully for exactly what you will need.

Each case is assessed individually but you may be asked to return a proportion of the Turing funding if you do not complete your placement.

You will receive approximately 70% of the total funding due to you once your placement agreement or study abroad has been signed, or we have other evidence of a mobility having been agreed. The remaining 30% will be paid on completion of the mobility.

The university cannot pay any of your costs directly (e.g. booking travel tickets or accommodation on your behalf).

The Turing Scheme does not provide direct opportunities which you can apply for. Instead you can arrange a placement, volunteering or study abroad opportunity through your school of study or independently. In the first instance you should contact your school’s Placement Officer or your course leader.
