Guidance for applicants

Thank you for your interest in working for the 91¶¶Òõ.

These guidance notes have been developed to help you create a good application, as well as to provide practical information about completing the online application form itself.

So please do take time to read them through before completing your application.

Read our privacy notice for job applicants

Search for a vacancy

Search for the latest jobs in the  section.

Our current vacancies are grouped together under the headings Academic, Administrative/Technical, or Other. You can click each group to browse jobs. To search by keyword use the 'Find jobs' tool on the right side of the screen, where you will also find a link to our advanced job search.

Once you have found a vacancy you are interested in, click the title and download the job description and person specification.

Application process

To apply for a position with us, click the 'Apply online' button to start your application. You'll be asked to register and set up an account or log into the account you've already created. Be sure to provide an email address you use regularly, because that's how we'll keep in touch with you about your application.

The university expects all applicants to apply online where possible. However, if you do not have access to the internet, please see below for how to request an alternative.

The online application process helps to ensure that all applicants provide information in the same format, enabling the selection panel to easily and consistently compare the applications that they receive.

You should note that you can only apply for one job at a time. You will need to complete and submit any partially completed application before starting an application for another role.

Online application

The following advice may help you complete your application successfully:

  • Ensure you read the relevant job description and person specification before completing your application online.
  • Have your own information to hand (e.g. employment history, qualifications and dates). This also applies to internal candidates.
  • For academic roles, a CV and other additional documents may be submitted; we do not accept CVs for professional support roles unless specified in the advert.
  • Applicants are shortlisted on the extent to which they meet the selection criteria on the job description and person specification. Therefore, do note that the most important section of your application is the section entitled ‘Supporting Statements’ where you need to demonstrate how your qualifications, experience and training meet the criteria of the post for which you are applying. Remember to include evidence and examples and you may also include voluntary work, if applicable.
  • Do note that the system makes your application anonymous so that the panel members cannot see any of your personal details such as your name or address, and any equalities data such as your gender. This is to ensure that shortlisting is as fair as possible. However if you upload a CV or publications list which includes any of these details then they will be visible to the panel. If you wish your application to be fully anonymous then please remove details such as your title, name and address from your uploaded documents.
  • The application process can be completed in stages and you can login/logout at any time. The screens automatically save as you enter your information and it is simple to move backwards and forwards within the online process at any time prior to submission. Help is available at each stage to guide you through the process.
  • Before final submission, you can preview your application and can choose to refine or submit the final application. Once submitted, be aware that you will not be able to amend your application again and so it is important to have checked it carefully before you submit it.

Additional information

This section can be used to add or highlight further examples to support your application.

Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) Check

The University of 91¶¶Òõ is committed to complying with its legal obligations in relation to recruiting people to work with children/vulnerable adults.

All applicants are asked whether they have any unspent (current) convictions in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act as part of the recruitment process. Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working with us. This will depend on the nature of the post you are applying for and the circumstances and background of the offence(s).

However there are some posts, which require the employee to have access to children or vulnerable adults as part of their normal duties, and will need the successful applicant to have a background check undertaken. This background check, referred to as a disclosure check is undertaken by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), at the request of the university.

All positions that require a DBS check are clearly identified as such in both the advertisement and within the person specification/post details.

References

Offers of employment are subject to two written references which are satisfactory to the university. References should be from your current or most recent employment. In most situations, references will be taken post offer of employment. In your application, you will be asked to confirm which of your referees can be approached.

Evidence of right to work

The government provides employers with that we can accept as proof of your continued right to work. If you have been granted a Settled/Pre-Settled status under the you will be able to share the digital code issued to you by the Home Office for the university to check your eligibility to work in the UK online.

Applicants with a disability

As a disability confident employer, we meet the standard to encourage and make adjustments for applicants with disabilities. We guarantee an interview to those who meet the selection criteria for the post.

Find out more about the on the GOV.UK website.

Job sharing

The 91¶¶Òõ welcomes job sharers. Job sharing is a way of working where two people share one full-time job, dividing the work, responsibilities, pay, holidays and other benefits between them proportionate to the hours each works, thereby increasing access to a wide range of jobs on a part-time basis.

Please check the advert which will state whether the role is suitable for job-sharing.

The university's policy, procedure and guidelines for job sharing are available from the People Department. Alternatively the People Department staff will be happy to answer any queries you may have.

All personal information will be treated strictly in accordance with Data Protection legislation. It will be collected and used only as necessary in order to administer and manage the appointment and employment relationship. It will be processed fairly, accurately and confidentially and will not be disclosed to others unlawfully.

The selection panel will assess all applicants against the requirements of the job description and person specification after the closing date.

All applicants will receive an email once shortlisting is completed. If you have not yet received an email, it may mean that the panel is still considering applications. However, you may wish to check the junk or spam folders of your email inbox in case any correspondence has gone there. If you are unsure, please email StaffRecruitment@brighton.ac.uk and include the reference number of the role you have applied for.
