International award for 91¶¶Òõ scientist

A 91¶¶Òõ scientist has won an international award for his research into microscopic fuel droplets.

1 October 2018

Professor Cyril Crua, the university’s Professor of Engineering, collected the award from the Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems (ILASS) at its conference in Chicago – the largest conference of its kind in the world.

Professor Crua, based at the Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories in the university’s Advanced Engineering Centre in Moulsecoomb, has spent 20 years in optical and laser-based diagnostics for experimental fluid dynamics, with a focus on spray formation and combustion.

Part of his research focuses on the microscopic fuel droplets as they reach combustion chambers. It is hoped that understanding the processes will lead to cleaner and more efficient fuels.

Professor Crua and his colleagues from Sandia National Laboratories (USA) won the ICLASS’s triennial for being the first to observe how microscopic fuel droplets can transition from liquid state into supercritical fluid in engines. Professor Yasusi Tanasawa was the one of the world’s foremost pioneers in the research of liquid atomization.

Professor Tara Dean, the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) said: “This is a tremendous achievement and I’m sure the entire university community will join me in congratulating Professor Crua and his team.

“This is a richly deserved accolade and demonstrates the high quality of research being conducted at the university and its impact around the world.”
