Words of wisdom

As well as being a very special occasion for all of the amazing graduates and their families and friends who attended, our Summer Graduation ceremonies this year contained inspiration and invaluable advice for those considering going to university.

7 August 2018

MOBO and BRIT award winner Akala stressed the need to get into good habits: “Don’t underestimate the importance of developing good habits. Try and practice every day towards goals, dreams and things you would like to do.”

He also highlighted the obligations of those who benefit from a university education: “Use what you gain to make the world a slightly better place and more liveable for other people even if it is only in small ways.”

Like other speakers during the week, award-winning artist Alison Lapper MBE stressed the importance of pursuing something you feel passionate about: “Work hard, follow your passion and be fabulous – like me!”

Successful businesswoman Sheila Flavell used her keynote speech to encourage graduates to lead by example: “Never has there been a greater need for fresh minds with an optimistic outlook. What are you going to do now in your life that is big enough, bold enough, and inspirational enough?”

Wildlife conservationist Lynne MacTavish urged graduates to question how they can make a positive difference for the planet: “Are we going to be the generation that is so absorbed by our phones and how many likes we get on social media that we never look up and see what is happening to our planet? Or are we going to be the generation to reverse this?”

Medical relief worker Pete Skelton who has worked in some of the toughest natural disaster and war zones on the planet advised: “Use what you learn to stand up for those who are less fortunate, care for those who need it and be a voice for those who are voiceless.”

Businessman and 91¶¶Òõ & Hove Albion FC chairman Tony Bloom’s message for those considering their next steps was simple: “Be bold. Just go for it!”

The ceremonies were wrapped up by Vice-Chancellor Professor Debra Humphris who quoted the words of the late Professor Stephen Hawking: “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”
