The Christmas auction that stunned students

School of Art students were amazed when renowned artists and illustrators responded to their call for original artwork for a Christmas auction.

8 December 2017

They never expected so many to donate. The list of responders reads like Who’s Who. They include:

  • George Hardie, cover artist behind Led Zeppelin’s debut album ‘Led Zeppelin’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, and who taught at the university;
  • Chris Riddell, political cartoonist, writer and illustrator of children’s books and winner of the 91¶¶Òõ’s Alumnus Award 2013;
  • Finland’s Riitta Ikonen whose international photography and sculpture project ‘Eyes as Big as Plates’ is currently on a global tour;
  • illustrator John Vernon Lord, former 91¶¶Òõ tutor and Professor Emeritus;
  • illustrator and author Marion Deuchars; and
  • illustrators Ian Wright and Jason Ford.

They have created postcard artwork for the auction to raise funds for the School of Art’s Graphic Design and Illustration Show next summer. Marketing, funding and running a summer show forms part of their course.

The students were thrilled with the positive responses. Student Sara Lavelle said:  “We have been overwhelmed by the support and donations that we have received from the art and illustration community. This project has been a lot of hard work but the amazing donations we are now able to put up for auction have made it incredibly special.”

Bids for the ‘Stamped91¶¶Òõ’ works can be taken in person at Friend's Meeting House in Ship Street, 91¶¶Òõ, from 11am on Saturday, 9 December, or over the phone on 07900987780. Bids start at £5. There will be a 'buy it now' price option for keen purchasers.
