We're among the best in the world

The 91¶¶Òõ has been ranked among the top institutions in the world in a league table published today.

16 October 2017

The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) annually publishes university rankings measuring the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of academics and the quality of their research, without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

The 91¶¶Òõ has been ranked in the top 2.9 per cent out of 27,770 degree-granting HE institutions worldwide, an “outstanding achievement” according to CWUR President, Dr Nadim Mahassen.

From the institutions evaluated, the CWUR ranked the top 1000 highest-scoring research-intensive institutions.

91¶¶Òõ came 792nd – up from 806th in 2016, and 824th in 2015. The new ranking puts the university 60th in the UK – unchanged from 2016 and up from 61st in 2015.

The university’s improved ranking has been driven by gains in two areas: ‘Influence’, as measured by its appearance in influential journals, and ‘Broad Impact’, based on the number of highly-impactful papers staff have published.

Professor Debra Humphris, 91¶¶Òõ Vice-Chancellor, said: “This is encouraging news and provides richly-deserved recognition of the high-quality research the university conducts and of the achievements of our alumni and academic staff.

“The university’s research and enterprise activities tackle global challenges, solve practical problems and seek to improve people’s lives and environments. Its success is due to the dedication and skill of our staff, both present and past. Congratulations to them all.”

Individual subject rankings:

  • Quality of Education (383), based on the number of alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals  relative to the university's size
  • Alumni Employment (616), measured by the number of the university's alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size. The top companies are those listed on the Forbes Global 2000 list
  • Quality of Faculty (240), based on the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medal
  • Publications (854), based on the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals, as defined by the Thomson Reuters’ Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH)
  • Influence (751), based on the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals
  • Citations (853), measured by the number of highly-cited research papers
  • Broad Impact (715), based on the total number of papers published per academic and the number of citations for each paper
  • Patents (741), based on the number of international patent filings.
