Incredible!

Incredible! That’s how the 91¶¶Òõ’s LGBT+ Staff Network Group and LGBT+ Student Society described 91¶¶Òõ and Hove Pride.

7 August 2017

More than 60 people from the two groups marched together during Saturday’s parade and joined an estimated 300,000 who took part in the weekend’s celebrations.

Emily Foyle, co-representative of LGBT+ Staff Network, said: “Marching in Pride was such a rewarding experience, there was such a great atmosphere and we all had a brilliant time. It was wonderful to see the reaction we received when current students, graduates and members of staff spotted us from the sides – we had lots of cheers and high fives!

“We were featured live on BBC Sussex radio and interviewed for a BBC documentary, as well as having loads of photos taken by the many photographers there.

Pride street parade

“It's important to remember that Pride isn't just about a party, but about being proud to be yourself and being proud to support everyone else to be themselves. We marched in solidarity and support for anyone feeling oppressed, discriminated or judged simply for being who they are. The 91¶¶Òõ has a vibrant, diverse and tolerant community that we were proud to represent this weekend.

“Together with the LGBT+ Student Society we put a lot of work into our entry and I really feel that it paid off. The crowd loved our sequin mortarboards and gowns and it was clear it meant a lot to many people there to see the university represented. It's safe to say we are all looking forward to doing it all again - bigger and better - next year and we would love even more staff and students to join us to have fun and support the community .”

Parker Robinson, former SU Vice President, said: “Marching with the staff and student LGBT+ community from the 91¶¶Òõ was such a fantastic experience. It was great to see a unity between the two groups while celebrating our diverse queer identities and history.

“A lot of work went into organising the parade itself and I couldn't have done it without the support of the equality and diversity team and staff network. Brilliant creativity and hard work saw some fantastic costumes as a result.
