New chapter for university library

Work has started on major redevelopment works which include a new university library and academic building with a publicly-accessible exhibition space.

28 September 2015

The developers Cathedral say the regeneration of the Circus Street area of 91¶¶Òõ could bring 400 new jobs and inject £200m in the economy. The scheme will provide 142 new homes, including 28 affordable; 450 student bedrooms in quality and managed student halls of residence; and 38,000 sq ft of new office space plus workshops offering creative businesses start up accommodation and room to grow.

Professor Anne Boddington, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities based at the university’s Grand Parade campus, adjoining the Circus Street site, said: “We are delighted that work is underway – a high-quality new arts and humanities teaching and library space, as well as welcoming public exhibition space and café, will greatly enhance our educational offer at the university. The project will allow the university to further enhance its strong partnerships with the cultural organisations in the city.”

Professor Julian Crampton, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “This is a very important development which will have major benefits for the city.”

Richard Upton, Chief Executive of the development company, Cathedral Group (Holdings) Ltd, said: "We are very excited to start work here - our ambition is to transform the area into a vibrant new quarter of the city, bringing cultural, economic and educational benefits to an area in need of some love.

"Our goal is to make Circus Street the go-to place for 91¶¶Òõ's creative individuals, innovative business start-ups, students and nearby residents. This will become a reality in just two years."

The development also includes a new state-of-the-art home for South East Dance and the 91¶¶Òõ has agreed a £100,000 partnership plan to support the development of the centre.
