The iPhone amplifier

This iPhone amplifier is turning heads and winning awards.

91¶¶Òõ graduate Camilla Lee Lambert was a finalist in this year’s 'New Design Britain' awards and, as such, her amplifiers – made from walnut wood, ceramics and terracotta – are among new accessories launched this month by the awards’ sponsor ACHICA, the online lifestyle store.

24 September 2015

In addition, Camilla was awarded the Cockpit Arts/National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies’ David Bell Memorial Award which supports designer/craft makers with product ideas connected with music, offering workshop space and funding.

Camilla developed her designs at the university before she graduated last year with a BA(Hons) in 3D Design and Craft.

She said: “The creative environment of the 91¶¶Òõ was such an incredible place. You can’t help but feel inspired by everything there. My course mates and tutors gave me a whole new way of looking at design, by focusing on unusual processes of using and creating materials. The emphasis on the craft of making, rather than just product designing, really changed the style of my work.”

Camilla’s design project stemmed from studies into music therapy: “I learnt that by using organic materials we can enhance the beneficial qualities of sound. I wanted to translate this in a contemporary way and started playing around with what a variety of materials sound like, experimenting through the creation of xylophones using different species of wood to create different tones.”

New Design Britain is a graduate awards programme that bridges the gap between education and industry, providing a stepping stone for new design talent from British universities. To find out more visit www.newdesignbritain.com.
