Review of the year

The 91¶¶Òõ’s outstanding research, innovations and breakthrough projects generated publicity throughout the UK, Europe and in some cases around the world during 2014.

Items included the World Health Organisation adopting Ebola sanitation guidelines based on research led by the university, and the Research Excellence Framework rating 92 per cent of the university’s research impact as “world leading or internationally excellent”. Below are just some of the items that made headlines.

Youth unemployment

The university was chosen to lead a new Europe-wide research project examining ways of overcoming youth unemployment.

Fox watch

University ecologists and a team from BBC's Winterwatch climbed high above the city streets for a roof-top view of urban foxes.

February

Big data

The university won a share of £4.6m grants to improve the accessibility of digital film production data and to trace people back through history to medieval times.

Look to the sea

University scientists were chosen to lead the way in a €2m study of marine life that could help develop new ways to fight infections, regenerate damaged skin and combat pollution.

March

Question Time

The university hosted an episode of BBC1's Question Time chaired by David Dimbleby.

Business boost

The university won more than £400,000 to help businesses in the region to grow.

Green success

We also scooped a top award for our green initiatives.

April

Transplant graduate
A university graduate who underwent a double lung transplant raised £13,000 with friends by completing the 91¶¶Òõ Marathon.

Healing war through art
The university hosted an exhibition of art work and writings from some of the 6,000 First World War soldiers who were treated in 91¶¶Òõ’s Royal Pavilion Hospital for Limbless Soldiers.

Green Growth
The university announced plans to launch a Green Growth Platform, a £3m, five-year scheme aimed at driving growth in the environmental business sector in Sussex.

Cameras and microphones
The university opened a £100,000 two-bedroom flat with rooms equipped with cameras and microphones, to support paramedic, midwifery and nursing students.

Breaking new ground
New techniques developed at the university to help archaeologists ‘see’ underground started unlocking the industrial secrets of an ancient civilisation

Homes for the future
A university-led scheme to help tackle climate change resulted in hundreds of homes being fitted with energy-saving systems here and in France and the university opened the first house built of rubbish.

Conserving the ecosystem
The university and the government joined forces for the launch of major new research aimed at helping policy makers conserve the UK’s terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Barracks build
The university and developers Cathedral Group (Holdings) Ltd exchanged contracts with 91¶¶Òõ and Hove City Council for the purchase and £150m redevelopment of the former Preston Barracks site in Lewes Road, 91¶¶Òõ.

University’s £700m value
A new study reported that the university contributes close to £700m annually into the economy and supports more than 7,000 jobs.

Rugby World Cup
The university was confirmed as a Team Base for the Samoan Team at the Falmer campus and for the South African Team at Eastbourne campus, as part of the Rugby World Cup 2015.

Circus Street green light
91¶¶Òõ & Hove City Council's Planning Committee approved the redevelopment of the derelict municipal market in the city centre, a project that will inject £200m into the economy and create 400 jobs.

Super fuels
The university was awarded £1m to develop ultra-efficient combustion engines and fuels aimed at enabling vehicles to travel further on less fuel – with near-zero emission.

Alice’s award
A university scientist won £80,000 funding to pursue ground-breaking research to improve the delivery of cancer-killing drugs.

Diabetes discrimination
Fifteen in every 100 UK people with diabetes have suffered discrimination and the public needs to improve their understanding of the condition, according to a new publication by the university.

November

LGBT research
An international research project led by the 91¶¶Òõ was announced to explore "what makes life liveable" for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) people.

More funding into ageing research
91¶¶Òõ and American scientists joined forces at the House of Lords to call for more funding to make a healthy old age a reality for millions.

Ebola hygiene guidelines
The World Health Organisation adopted new hygiene guidelines to fight the spread of Ebola – with support from the university.

New Engineering Centre
A new Advanced Engineering Centre with state-of-the-art facilities is to be established at the university.

World-leading impact
The university was recognised for producing research of “world-leading quality” which has “outstanding impact”, by the UK’s four higher education funding bodies.
