University helps hundreds of green businesses to thrive

Hundreds of green businesses in Sussex are taking advantage of a 91¶¶Òõ initiative to help grow the local environmental sector.

12 November 2014

Around 260 companies are already taking advantage of the university's £3m just five month after launch. The businesses that sign up to the platform's business growth services, can benefit from a range of support including one-to-one business coaching, events and networking, innovation/research and development and skills and training workshops.

The platform is leading a number of innovation and research and development projects, to develop new products and services that will contribute to a greener economy. One example is Waterblade, a new device that fits to a tap and reduces water consumption by up to twice as much as a standard eco aerating nozzle. The platform has helped inventor Nigel Bamford go from initial idea to exploring entry to market, through an innovation grant that enabled him to work with the university's product design team and through connections made with large businesses in his sector. Nigel said: "Many thanks for being instrumental in making this happen!"

A Green Growth Platform MSc module has been developed with , Lecturer, in the School of Environment and Technology, which will give students the opportunity to take part in an accredited placement with member businesses. The platform has also facilitated 15 green internships, placing recent graduates with green sector businesses.

A business focused events programme is also underway, with themed networking breakfasts, behind-the-scenes tours of industry specific sites and training sessions for small businesses on tendering and other growth-related topics.

You can find out more about the work of the Green Growth Platform at or contact the team at greengrowthplatform@brighton.ac.uk or 01273 641949.
