Students cover local news

Two students from the 91¶¶Òõ in Hastings are undertaking paid internships at local newspapers, the Hastings Observer and the Eastbourne Herald.

Published 6 January 2014

Lauren Troup and Jordan Hogan, both second-year students studying Broadcast Journalism BA(Hons) are working with the newspapers to help create video content for online readers and add to skills they have already acquired on the course.

Lauren, who has been an intern at the Hastings Observer since June, 2013, has already interviewed local councillors, dignitaries and covered local events.

She said: "My job involves filming and editing videos for the paper's website to try and increase readership figures. Working as part of a close-knit editorial team is fantastic because I learn exactly what the reporters and editor require of me.

What I love most about working for a local paper is the diversity of work. No one week is ever the same as another.

"Colleagues, councillors, residents, artists or actors - I've met some fantastic people and am hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given."

Lauren also recently won a Hastings Youth Award for her work within the local community.

Jordan's internship at the Eastbourne Herald started in November, 2013. He is also be creating video content, working with specialist software to edit and upload this content to the Eastbourne Herald's website.

The internships were arranged as part of the Broadcast Journalism BA(Hons) course, which is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) and whose 2013 graduates have already go on to secure jobs at BT Sport's Sunday Night Football and LBC 97.3's Scores.
