Gold for Faye

Alumnus Faye McClelland won her fourth world title in a row after sitting out most of the year studying for her 91¶¶Òõ finals.

Published 26 September 2013

She took gold in the Tri-4 category at the recent ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Hyde Park but admitted she wasn't feeling totally confident before the start of the race:

"I had so many doubts… I knew I had to work hard on the bike."

Faye is originally from Ruislip, Middlesex, and now lives in Eastbourne. She won the TRI4 event at Hyde Park in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and is the current World and European Champion. The 2009 event in Hyde Park was her first Paratriathlon. She had competed in able-bodied events previous to that, having taken up the sport only recently.

Faye, who combined her Physiotherapy BSc(Hons) with paratriathlon events, is also European and national paratriathlon champion.

Faye discovered paratriathlons in 2009 while attempting to regain some former fitness after returning from a year of travelling overseas. Faye didn't have a sporty upbringing but was always very active and enjoyed keeping fit. Between the years of 2005-2007, she started to take part in some charity runs and able-bodied sprint triathlons whilst working as a fitness instructor.

Sarah Hogg, the university's Director of Sport and Recreation, said: "Retaining her World Paratriathlon championship title came after a hard year finishing her physiotherapy degree.

"She performed amazingly well, and many congratulations to her."
