School of Applied Sciences

Our School of Applied Sciences specialises in research and education in the fields of biology, biomedical science, pharmaceutical science, chemistry, ecology and conservation, geography, environment and pharmacy. This diversity provides a rich environment to tackle global problems using multidisciplinary approaches.

Our students belong to a talented and supportive community, offering a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and PhD opportunities. Our core value is to provide excellence in teaching and learning and provide students with employability enhancing skills.

The extensive pure and applied research within the school, together with accredited degrees, consultancy and outreach activity, and placement opportunities, ensures our curriculum is up-to-date, relevant and offers practical experience and applied learning.

Based at our Moulsecoomb campus our students benefit from proximity to varied fieldwork opportunities in our local area, as well as overseas, and access to our specialist labs and facilities.

About us

Accreditation

Accreditation is an industry-recognised standard and provides the assurance that our teaching is of high quality and has been approved by an independent body of academics and industrialists. Our courses are accredited by professional bodies including:

Applied learning

With placement opportunities and extensive work in labs and in the field, practical learning is at the heart of our learning experience.

Fieldwork enables students to develop practical skills and apply their learning in real-world situations, preparing them for life beyond university. Our students studying biology, ecology, geography, Earth or environmental subjects enjoy fieldwork opportunities in our local area as well as further afield. Recent field trip destinations include the South Downs, Pembrokeshire, Morocco, Sicily, South Africa and Portugal.

All of our undergraduate courses have a placement option. Our pharmacy students benefit from placements in every year of the course in hospital or community settings. And hospital visits and lectures from visiting clinical and biomedical scientists enhance the learning experience of our biomedical students and provide a professional context for their studies.

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI)

The school has committed to the principles of the Athena Swan charter and embedding them across the school. The Athena Swan Charter aims to address unequal gender representation across Higher Education and advance gender equality, representation, progression and success for all. The school has undertaken an evidence-based self-assessment of its staff and student data, culture, practices and procedures and created an action plan to address the issues it has identified.

Research and knowledge exchange

The School of Applied Sciences fosters research and knowledge exchange excellence across all its disciplines.

Our academics are founders and members of several of the university's Centres of Research and Knowledge Exchange Excellence (COREs). These, together with Research Excellence Groups (REGs) allow the presentation of our research in distinct themes, methodologies and academic interests.

We offer research study for doctoral degrees in all the areas represented through our COREs and REGs. Visit the university Doctoral College pages for further initial information and use our .
